How to Grow Courgettes: Space, Soil and Sunlight

Courgettes may look easy to grow, yet they need plenty of room, fertile soil and long periods of sunshine to crop well. Seedlings planted too tightly, in waterlogged ground or a shaded spot will grow weakly, produce few female flowers and yield small or misshapen fruits.

Why do courgettes need so much space?

Courgette plants develop large leaves, sturdy stems and take up more growing room than many people expect. Gardening guidance states that courgettes need a sunny position, rich soil and roughly one square metre per plant to grow strongly.

If plants are positioned too close together, their leaves compete for light and restrict air movement. This cramped environment encourages fungal problems, makes flower pollination more difficult and disrupts fruit development.

How should courgette seedlings be positioned for a larger crop?

The best spacing varies by cultivar, but the key is to leave enough room for the leaves to spread without fully covering the next plant. In rows, many recommendations allow around 90 cm to 1 metre between plants, with similar spacing in wide beds.

Use the following approach to arrange the planting more effectively:

  • leave at least 90 cm between standard-sized seedlings;
  • do not plant near vegetables that will cast shade over the bed;
  • keep paths clear so you can harvest without breaking leaves;
  • choose compact varieties if the garden is small;
  • remove diseased leaves to improve ventilation.

How can you prepare soil with suitable drainage?

Courgettes prefer rich, moist soil, but their roots must not sit in water. Agricultural extension services recommend fertile, well-drained ground, with organic matter worked in before planting to improve soil structure and provide balanced water retention.

Drainage can be improved by adding well-rotted compost, creating slightly raised beds and loosening the soil before setting out seedlings. When water pools after watering, roots are deprived of oxygen and the risk of rot rises.

How many hours of direct sunlight do courgettes need?

Courgettes crop best in full sun. The usual guidance is to provide at least 6 hours of direct light daily, although plants receiving 6 to 8 hours of sunshine generally flower more successfully and set fruit more consistently.

A few measures can help make the most of available light:

  • select the sunniest part of the garden;
  • avoid morning shade cast by high walls;
  • plant away from trees with dense canopies;
  • watch the sun’s path before making the bed;
  • keep foliage healthy so it can feed the fruits.

How can courgette production remain strong throughout the season?

Courgette cultivation relies on a balance of space, water and light. The plant grows quickly and performs best when its roots are in fertile soil that is evenly moist, not compacted and never waterlogged.

Fruit production improves when every seedling has direct sun, airflow and open space in which to extend its leaves. In a well-drained bed with organic matter and correct spacing, courgettes stop using energy to compete for room and instead produce flowers and fruits more steadily.
