#Safe2Eat: the European campaign for food safety

The #Safe2Eat campaign aims to help people make informed decisions about their food choices, while explaining the science that underpins food safety in the European Union.

Food safety is no longer simply a technical issue handled behind the scenes; it has become central to the relationship between consumers, producers and retailers. At a time when food supply chains are increasingly lengthy and global, ensuring that food reaching the table is safe, traceable and responsibly produced has become a shared commitment. This is the principle behind the European #Safe2Eat campaign, led by EFSA – the European Food Safety Authority – which reaffirms the European Union’s role in advancing safe and transparent food practices.

EFSA guidance for informed food choices

EFSA seeks to raise public awareness of food safety by offering practical, science-based guidance that enables people to make informed food decisions every day. Now in its 6th edition, the campaign is supported in Portugal by ASAE – the Food and Economic Safety Authority. As EFSA’s focal point in Portugal, ASAE is responsible for assessing and communicating risks throughout the food chain.

#Safe2Eat: engaging everyone in the food chain

Safe2Eat is more than a hashtag: it is an awareness movement that brings together European authorities, producers, retailers and consumers around one shared aim – strengthening confidence in the food chain. The campaign focuses on clear communication about issues including contaminant controls, the traceability of food and food supplements, good hygiene practices in production and storage, and the role of labels in informing consumers. Across its six editions, the campaign has succeeded in putting food safety on the public agenda, demonstrating that safeguarding what we eat is the responsibility of every link in the chain.

“In the sixth edition of the #Safe2Eat campaign, the message is clear: eating safely is a right, but also a shared responsibility.”

Responsibility across Europe

The 2026 edition covers 23 countries across Europe and beyond. This broader participation highlights the campaign’s continued importance in supporting safe, informed food choices throughout Europe and outside its borders.

The campaign brings together EU Member States – Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain – as well as partner countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey. According to the analysis of the 2025 edition, 41% of European citizens were reached and acknowledged the campaign’s importance in raising awareness, encouraging reflection and promoting discussion around safer, more conscious choices.

Food safety and consumer expectations

This sixth edition arrives at a particularly significant time, when consumers are more alert and demanding than ever. Growing demand for transparency, concerns about allergens, product origin and the environmental impact of food production mean that food safety has become as important a purchasing criterion as taste or price. Brands and retailers that invest in robust quality-control procedures and communicate this information clearly gain not only trust, but also a competitive advantage in an increasingly well-informed market.

In this sixth edition, the message remains clear: eating safely is a right, but it is also a shared responsibility. Through #Safe2Eat, Europe continues to lead the way.
