In autumn and winter especially, when houseplants are moved closer to windows and often receive too much water, they tend to appear in large numbers: tiny black flies dancing over the compost. Many plant nurseries then turn to an unassuming aid that sounds more suited to a barbecue than plant care: the matchstick. This seemingly odd trick is based on a surprisingly effective approach to fungus gnats.
What is actually flying around: fungus gnats, not fruit flies
Thinking of fruit bowls in summer can quickly bring fruit flies to mind. In many plant pots, however, the insects are something else entirely: fungus gnats. They usually rest on the compost or flutter just above it.
While the adult insects are chiefly a nuisance, their larvae pose the real risk. They live in the upper, damp layer of compost, feed on organic debris and may damage the fine roots of houseplants. This can weaken plants over time.

Essential precautions when using matchsticks
Although the method appears simple, several rules should be followed:
- Never light matchsticks before inserting them.
- Always store the box out of children’s reach.
- Where pets are concerned, cover the compost surface with fine decorative gravel or another mineral material so that matchsticks cannot be chewed.
- Stop the treatment and inspect the plant if there is a musty smell, heavily yellowing leaves or stagnant growth.
If several pots are kept in the same room, all affected plants should be treated consistently. Otherwise, the fungus gnats will simply move from one to another, limiting the effect.

Those expecting the infestation to disappear completely overnight are likely to be disappointed. For very valuable plants, sensitive species such as rare orchids, or persistent large-scale infestations, it is worth considering alternatives more closely. Beneficial organisms such as certain nematodes are applied with the watering water and specifically target the larvae. This is well suited to households with young children or animals if using matchsticks feels uncomfortable.
A complete compost change is also advisable if the growing medium is already heavily compacted, mouldy or has not been renewed for years. This also provides an opportunity to adjust drainage, pot size and watering habits – giving the plant a fresh start.

A common scenario in plant nurseries is a pot of basil bought from a supermarket, placed directly by the kitchen-sink window, watered almost every day and left standing in water continuously. Before long, touching it stirs up swarms of tiny gnats.

- Reduce the watering frequency; only water again when the top layer of compost looks dry.
