Famalicão to clear 80 hectares for priority strips by June

Vila Nova de Famalicão Council intends to clear 80 hectares of land to establish priority strips by the end of June.

The target forms part of the Municipal Forest Defence Plan against Wildfires and is intended to strengthen protection for the area, its residents and woodland spaces.

According to the local authority, the work around industrial estates has already been completed. Alongside the clearance programme, the council says it has also invested in improving the forest road network.

“By the end of April, approximately 5.5 kilometres of forest tracks had been restored, an essential measure to ensure access and rapid deployment for monitoring, initial response and firefighting resources,” the council said in a statement issued to the press. “A permanent team dedicated exclusively to work in forest areas also remains on site,” it added.
