Washing Powder as a Weedkiller for Gravel Paths

Weeds are shooting up through the gravel, your back aches from weeding, and you do not want to use chemicals – yet there is supposedly a simple trick from the laundry room.

Anyone with a parking area, courtyard or garden path made of gravel or crushed stone knows the problem: as soon as it looks tidy, green clumps begin pushing through the gaps again. Conventional weedkillers are controversial, while household remedies such as vinegar are attracting increasing criticism. Garden forums are now focusing on a very different product: ordinary supermarket washing powder.

Why weeds thrive in gravel

At first glance, gravelled areas look barren and inhospitable. Over time, however, the spaces between the stones develop into an ideal miniature growing medium.

  • Rainwater collects in the gaps.
  • Wind blows dust and soil into them.
  • Leaves, pollen and bird droppings break down into fine humus.
  • Seeds from grasses and wild plants cling to shoes and car tyres.

Together, these create a thin but highly fertile layer. Even where a membrane has been laid beneath the gravel, roots can often find tiny tears and gaps. Dandelions, plantains, millet and similar plants can therefore take over a supposedly “low-maintenance” path in no time.

Washing powder as a secret weapon – how it works

Users in several British gardening communities are now describing a straightforward approach: rather than vinegar, they use washing powder, usually combined with boiling water. The discussion was prompted by accounts such as that of one user who could not get her gravel path under control despite using a conventional weedkiller and asked for alternatives.

Other amateur gardeners responded that basic washing powder had produced much better results on gravel surfaces. The reported effect almost sounds too good to be true: the foliage quickly changes colour, dries out and can be removed easily after a few days.

The method is shared in several forms, but the basic principle remains much the same. This is how users describe the process:

  1. Choose a dry day: The surface should not be wet, so the powder can initially stick to the leaves.
  2. Sprinkle lightly: Scatter washing powder directly over plants growing through the gravel. Do not tip it across the entire area.
  3. Pour on boiling water: Carefully pour boiling water over the treated spots using a kettle or heat-resistant watering can.
  4. Leave it to work: Wait several days for the greenery to yellow and dry out.

Where washing powder may be suitable – and where it is not

Experts consider washing powder as a weedkiller suitable only for very clearly defined areas. Potentially appropriate locations include:

  • gravel and crushed-stone paths without adjoining beds
  • paved or stone driveways where no planting is intended
  • car parks and parking spaces made from mineral aggregate

It is unsuitable for areas intended for future planting, or those directly beside vegetable beds, herbs or lawns. Rain can wash the mixture into neighbouring soil, where it may weaken roots or place a long-term burden on the ground.

  • Pets and children: Fresh powder may be licked up by dogs or swallowed by children; after use, the area should be thoroughly rinsed or the powder fully washed in.

On the positive side, specialists note that, unlike aggressive chemical treatments, washing powder does not generally attack stone surfaces. According to reports so far, delicate natural stone and concrete slabs remain undamaged.

Alternatives, from paving scrapers to gas burners

Anyone unconvinced by washing powder has several other ways to keep a gravel path reasonably free from weeds. None is perfect, and many require time and physical effort, but they are gentler on the environment and soil.

  • Mechanical methods: Paving scrapers, weed brushes and scrapers can remove plants along with their roots. It is hard work, but targeted.
  • Hot water without additives: Plain boiling water alone can significantly weaken many wild plants.
  • Hot-steam or hot-foam machines: These professional methods, used by local authorities on pavements, are now also available to private users.
  • Gas burners: These burn off green growth, but fire safety requires particular attention, especially in dry conditions.

In the long run, the only effective approach is to keep the organic layer in the gravel as minimal as possible: remove leaves regularly, sweep away loose soil and ensure stable separation layers when installing a new surface.

Using washing powder tricks responsibly

For many amateur gardeners, the washing-powder tip appears to offer a practical middle ground between ineffective hand weeding and unwanted chemicals. Anyone who wants to try it should recognise that a cleaning product is being used for a purpose other than intended – with all the uncertainties that involves.

A cautious approach could include:

  • treating only small test areas
  • using as little product as possible
  • directing run-off water carefully and preventing it from entering beds
  • avoiding regular, widespread use over a period of years

More generally, it may be worth reconsidering the design of heavily overgrown gravel paths. Some courtyards may ultimately look more attractive, and require less long-term work, with a solid lower-maintenance surface or deliberately planted gaps than with an apparently “clean” strip of gravel that needs tackling with ever more new tricks year after year.
