Many homeowners know the frustration: driveways and paths on Instagram look as though they belong in a catalogue, while at home every blast from the leaf blower sends gravel spilling across the lawn. A neat, solid kerb edge would solve the issue, but it usually costs a great deal of money and effort. A surprising tip from the DIY community addresses precisely this: unopened bags of concrete are simply repurposed as driveway edging.
Why concrete bags improve the appearance of your driveway
Concrete bags would normally be bought from a builders’ merchant and later mixed in a mixing tray. Some inventive DIY enthusiasts came up with another approach: leave the bags sealed, put them straight into the ground, and let them form a substantial edge there.

The result catches many people off guard: a gravel surface that previously spread out now gains a clearly defined line. It directs the eye and makes the driveway look tidier and more refined. At the same time, the concrete edge performs several practical functions:

- It prevents grass from creeping into the driveway.
- It limits erosion during heavy rain.
- It makes driving and manoeuvring at the edge easier.
Cost is another advantage. A bag of ready-mixed concrete weighing around 25 kg generally costs only a few pounds. A typical driveway requires a manageable number of bags, often making this cheaper than paving blocks or concrete edging units. It also avoids much of the usual labour: there is no mixing in a tray, no elaborate formwork and no complicated laying of stones.
The most common misconception about driveway edges
When creating gravel paths, most garden owners make the same mistake: the path simply fades softly into the lawn or flowerbed, often with nothing more than a shallow bank of soil. It may look acceptable at first, but the problems arrive after the first autumn. Leaf blowers, lawnmowers and rain repeatedly displace the gravel, leaving the edges ragged.
The concrete-bag method addresses exactly this weak point. Rather than an invisible, soft boundary, it creates a visible and hard-wearing edge. It may seem insignificant in day-to-day use, yet it has major benefits: less remedial work, a cleaner appearance, and greater convenience when mowing or clearing snow.
Choosing the right concrete bags
This approach only works with suitable materials. Three factors matter: the type of concrete, bag size and packaging.
Which concrete mix is suitable
Use bags of ready-mixed concrete: dry mixes that already contain cement, sand and aggregate. Cement alone is not enough, because it lacks the aggregate needed for strength and durability.
Builders’ merchants commonly stock 25 kg and 30 kg bags. Both options work, provided they offer adequate strength. Products intended for foundations, fence posts or smaller concrete jobs are usually particularly suitable.
Why paper packaging is essential
The bag itself plays a surprisingly important role. Bags made entirely from paper, without an inner plastic layer, are ideal. Water needs to penetrate the bag during watering so that the concrete inside can cure. Afterwards, the paper should gradually rot away or be removable with a pressure washer.
If coated or plastic-reinforced bags are used, an unattractive covering that is difficult to remove will remain on the edge. Before buying, check briefly: plain paper, no film and no impermeable plastic layer.
Preparing the ground correctly
The base determines whether the kerb edge lasts for years or starts to lean after its first winter. A little preparation is worthwhile.
- Mark out the route: Use a taut string line or garden hose to mark the intended edge. Gentle curves are possible, but very tight radii are best avoided.
- Excavate the soil: Dig a narrow trench a few centimetres deep along the line – deep enough for the bags to sit slightly within the ground rather than resting on top of it.
- Compact the base: Firm the soil with a hand tamper or the back of a spade.
- Add a drainage layer: A thin layer of gravel or chippings improves drainage and reduces frost damage.
Careful work at this stage prevents the concrete bags from sinking or tipping later because the soil beneath them gives way.
Positioning, watering and curing concrete bags
Aligning the bags correctly
When placing them, it is worth considering which side faced down while the bags were stored: finer material settles at the bottom of the bag during storage. If this former underside is placed uppermost, the finished surface will be somewhat uneven and stony. Using the other side as the top produces a noticeably more uniform appearance.
Set the bags tightly together along the trench, align them carefully and press them in lightly. Minor misalignments can be corrected with your foot or a wooden batten. The aim is to create an uninterrupted line with no visible steps between individual blocks.
Watering without making a mess
To allow water to reach the concrete, make several small holes in the top of each bag using a craft knife or screwdriver. Then comes the key step:
- Water gently with a garden hose until the entire bag appears saturated.
- Do not flood it so heavily that cement slurry leaks out and soils the lawn.
- Press the bags down lightly with your foot from time to time to even out their height.
After a few hours, the concrete will visibly begin to harden, and after a day the blocks will already feel firm. They do not reach their full load-bearing capacity until just over four weeks have passed. During this period, car tyres should not roll directly over the fresh edge.
Care, appearance and possible adjustments
Over time, the paper layer will detach by itself, as long as it contains no impermeable plastic barrier. Anyone wanting a cleaner finish sooner can wait until the concrete has fully cured, then remove the remaining material with a pressure washer. What remains are pale concrete blocks with a gently rounded shape.
If bare concrete feels too plain, there are several creative options:
- Mineral paint or stain can make individual blocks resemble natural stone.
- Applying lightly pigmented slurry with a brush creates rustic, irregular effects.
- Gravel or decorative aggregate scattered along the sides conceals transitions and minor imperfections.
If a block moves or the route no longer appeals, replacing it with a spade and some physical effort is laborious but possible. Compared with poured concrete foundations, this remains a relatively flexible solution.
Limitations, risks and useful additions
This method is most suitable for driveways and paths subject to moderate use. Heavy lorries, tight manoeuvres or sloping approaches can place more strain on the blocks than they can withstand. In such situations, conventional kerbs or concrete edging units are often more robust.
Frost and standing water are another consideration. In areas with severe frost, the sub-base should drain especially well so that no pockets of water form beneath the bags and put pressure on the edge when they freeze. For very wet ground, the gravel layer can be made slightly thicker.
A narrow lawn edge is often a useful addition, such as a metal strip or a low stone mowing edge. The lawnmower can then run neatly along the concrete edge without damaging it. A membrane beneath the gravel surface is equally sensible, preventing weeds from growing through the newly cleanly defined driveway.
Once you understand how concrete bags work, other possible uses quickly become apparent: as a quick foundation for a timber shelter, as a low step leading to a patio, or as a temporary boundary for a parking area. The driveway is an ideal testing ground – visible, yet easy to control.
